To CMS or not?

Whenever starting a brand new website there is always one question that is hard to answer. Should we implement a CMS or not?

First of all, what is a CMS? CMS stands for Content Management System. The benefits of using it are clear. Anyone can login and easily update or change the content of the website. It will also save money on hiring a web designer any time changes are necessary.

However, there certainly are drawbacks. No matter how easy a system is to use, there is still a learning curve. As with any software, the site manager will have to take the time to learn how to use the system and if you are not computer savvy this can be frustrating. It also becomes a little useless if you need to change more then just a little content. If you are promoting an event for example it would be easy enough to add it to your calendar but you may still need to hire a web designer to create some marketing materials, banners, etc.

In order to make a clear choice you need to ask yourself three main questions.

1. How often will my site need updating?

If the answer is not very often, then you probably don’t need a Content Management System. The amount of money it would cost to hire a contract web designer when changes are necessary will likely be less then the amount to implement and learn an entire CMS.

2. Am I comfortable making small changes myself?

If the answer is yes, a CMS might be a fun and practical choice.  You might have to take the time to learn the software but if you are the type to enjoy control and learning it will likely benefit you to use a CMS and have full control over your website.

3. Will I require consist ant updates beyond the control of the CMS?

The answer to this question may be the most important. Even if you like doing the updates yourself and enjoy working on your website, it may not be practical. If you are going to need to hire a graphic or web designer to promote a new product, or event or anything else you might as well let them update the entire site. At least then you know you will get quality work and not have to worry about it yourself.

Content Management Systems have grown to be very powerful, but you should be careful when to use them and when not to. Not every person has the ability or desire to learn and update their website. Please keep this in mind when choosing the building blocks of your website.
